China builds concrete structures on Mabini Reef
MANILA — Unmindful of the protests against its behavior in the disputed territories, China is building concrete barriers on the reclaimed area of Mabini Reef also known as Johnson South Reef in Spratly Islands.
“Along with the ongoing reclamation activity at the reef is the construction of concrete sea barriers on the already reclaimed area,” said Palawan-based fishing operator Haji Pasi Abdulpatah, whose group has been fishing regularly in the area.
This is despite calls by other claimant countries for China to stop the construction of any concrete structures in the disputed areas.
The same group also confirmed that China is also planning to build barriers in three more of their occupied reefs.
Meanwhile, another group has reported that they have spotted Chinese ships lingering in the Recto (Reed) Bank , a territory where an ongoing oil exploration project is being conducted by the Philippines.
Other reports of local fishermen also earlier indicated that an increase in China’s maritime patrol operation is observed in several parts of the territories including in Hasa-Hasa (Half Moon) Shoal.
