Usapang Pinoy: Filipino Students and ESL
Concerned members of the Filipino community organized a community forum on March 14 at the Sir Charles Tupper Secondary School to discuss Filipino high school students’ experiences as English Language Learners and their less-than-expected educational achievements.
Speakers were May Farrales, PhD Student, Geography, UBC (Holding spaces: Filipino high school students’ experiences with English as a Second Language); Joy Jose, Multicultural Liaison Worker, Vancouver School Board (Challenges that Filipino high school students are facing in the Vancouver School System); Rene John Nicolas, Lawyer, Founding Member of Kababayan UBC (KAMP Mentorship Program history and vision) and Bryan Antes, BCIT student (Testimony from a former English Language Learner).
